74th annual Silver Sailfish Derby results
By now almost everyone has heard about the amazing results of last weeks West Palm Beach Fishing Clubs Silver Sailfish Derby. The 35 boat fleet tagged 677 sailfish in three days of fishing!. This year’s tournament broke the record for the best 3-day catch per boat average. This year’s fleet averaged 6.45 sails per boat each day, besting the previous record of 6.39 sails per boat each day in the 2006 Derby. Get Lit, owned by Miami angler Kit Toomey and Captained by Quinton Dieterle, were able to fish their way to a first place finish. Dieterle guided the team to victory with a three-day total of 37 sailfish that were caught and released. Aboard Get Lit, angler Peter Miller took home "Top Angler" honors for the event with 18 sailfish caught and released. Captain Ray Rosher and Team Weez In The Keys, claimed second as they released a three-day total of 34 sailfish. Team Murray was third with 33 releases. Day 1 saw 174 Sailfish released; Day 2 saw 287; and Day three accounted for 216 releases.

On Monday Capt Ernie Smalls on the Baby Grand out of Riviera Beach had a nice trip as his mate Capt RJ Torsey wrote: “A stiff south east wind greeted us on our way out the inlet this morning. On the hunt for sails, we deployed tinker mackerel, goggle eyes, and blue runners on the kite. Considering we had only two anglers, we didn't want to get too complicated and only chose to fly one side today. It wasn't even 10 minutes and we were hooked up to a double header. 85 year old Lynn Wiener from Palm Beach Gardens, and 18 year old Jake Bernard from New York, caught both fish simultaneously. Congratulations to both men for catching their first sails today! After a period of quietness we had another double bite but unfortunately one fish escaped, but we got the other one. 3 for 4 on the morning, not a bad trip!” Great Job guys! You can book a trip for a Full-day or Half-day on the Baby Grand with Capt Ernie and RJ by calling 561-722-7279.

Capt Bill Taylor on the Black Dog out of Jupiter reported a strong week so far with the seas being quite “Sporty” this morning. He told AskYourCaptain that the Kingfish caught have been of nice size averaging 30lbs down across from Lost Tree Village; Inshore around the high-bar he has been doing well with Lane and Yellowtail Snapper; a mess of Cobia have been cooperating (in among the sharks) just off the edge at the Hole in the Wall; and the Sailfish seem to be inshore and offshore from the High-bar area out to 200 feet. Call Capt Bill Taylor on the Black Dog to fish by yourself or some of your buddies by calling him at 561-744-5700

Capt Lee Egan on the Sea Horse Adventures out of Riviera Beach says that North of the Lake Worth Inlet, King bite has been good between Lost Tree and the Juno Pier with live bait producing much better. Drifting dead Sardines has been able to produce a mess of beautiful Spanish Mackerel averaging 5-6lbs, with a couple in the 8-9 lb range; Cobias are biting on and off as well. South of the Lake Worth inlet, the Yellowtail bite has been good with a couple real nice Muttons mixed in as well as small Blackfin’s and the occasional Sailfish. You can walk on Capt Lee’s drift boat the Sea Horse by yourself or bring some friends by calling 561-254-5124.
